  • What is a widget
  • How to quickly and easily add widgets to your Captivate projects
  • How to customize widget properties
  • How to use a variety of the widgets included with Captivate (and some that aren’t)

Widgets are configurable SWF objects created in Flash

3 types of widgets

  • Static
  • Interactive
  • Question

Case study: You’ve been asked to crate an elearning course on short-term disability (demo project available for download)

Perpetual button: add it one time to the first slide and you will have back/forth  buttons appear on each slide (cannot really customize it) Use for super simple navigation. Remember to make it visible and set to rest of project.

GoToSlide Widget: drop down box that allows you to jump to any slide in the presentation. An alternative to the TOC menu. Allows you to narrow the options for jumping to slides (does not have to be all of the slides in a presentation). You have to use Flash to make the text larger in the drop down box.

Checkbox Widget: A way to create an “interactive” feature on a slide. Doesn’t measure anything in its default state.

Checkbox with variables: check off answers and have the checked off answers fill out a slide

Help icon widget:  provide a help file.  URLs need to be right-clicked on to open the web page

Chart widget: allows for a rollover effect on pieces of the chart. limited amount of customization can be done. can save an excel file as a .csv and import it

Table widget: limited amount of customization can be done. can save an excel file as a .csv and import it

Email widget: will bring up the default email program on the computer you are on. Prefill the TO: and the Subject

Arrow widget

YouTube widget: not included with Captivate but it can be downloaded. Included in the resources slide of this presentation

Web page widget: not included with Captivate but it can be downloaded. Included in the resources slide of this presentation. must be connected to the Internet for the web page to load.

Certificate widget: creates a certificate that learner can print. Make sure that they change the printer setting to landscape because the default is portrait.

One way to insert a widget is to go to Insert > Widget. Takes you to the Adobe Captivate Widgets folder. Another way is to go to the drop down menu which usually defaults to Classic. Select Widget to get a widget tab/window to get a visual view of the widget.

Presenter then showed how to add widgets to a Captivate project.

Nice presentation!
