#dl09 Friday’s Opening Session – Leo Laporte: Why New Media Matters

Leo Laporte is Chief TWiT of the TWiT Netcast Network and the Host of the nationally syndicated radio show "The Tech Guy".
??
When radio was created, it was created as a one-to-one media.
??
It takes a couple of generations for people to realize that new technologies can be used in different ways than it was initially developed/designed for.
??
Leo told us a story about how bacon was advertised as part of a hearty breakfast.?? Leo didn't realize he shouldn't have told this same story when presenting to an audience in Dubai.?? 🙂
??
It took Leo several years to get show on a radio station.??New media has brought down the cost of creating content and globalized the ability to create the content.
??
The power of network TV has decreased – do you know who the anchors are on the nightly news?
If you want to know about water, don't ask a fish.?? It is too close to the thing you are asking about.?? We are the same when it comes to technology/new media.
??
Old media??-??the owners could dictate what and who was on.?? New media – I am the owner. I can become a media mogul.
??
TechTV cable show:?? Had to beg to be on cable stations.?? Smart people don't care about advertising so getting advertisers was hard.?? TechTV died.?? 😦
??
Microchips and the Internet have transformed the creation of media.?? Anyone can be the media now.
??
80% of everything is crap. – Theodore Strurgeon. Leo says that this is the amount, if not more, of what is on the Internet.
??
Leo started with recording podcasts which led to This Week in Tech.?? He had a good following but didn't like the medium.?? Started to put a camera on himself while he was doing the podcasts.?? Uses live streaming to get to his audience.?????? Built a live TV studio and does the show with a much smaller staff.?? He runs his own audio.?? Uses Skype to have people on his show.?? With all of this, he is reaching an audience that is larger than TechTV, he isn't beholden to advertisers or management, he's doing it for a lower cost.
??
Anyone can tell their story and not be reliant on mainstream media.?? You can hear everybody voice.?? There is a lot of noise, but you can hear all points of view.??
??
There's been a shift from a monologe to a conversation.??
??
What's important now is how engaged you are with your audience, not the number of eyeballs.
??
A Call to Action:?? ACTA Treaty – being negotiated in secret.?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement
Accused of piracy (not convicted) three times:?? your Internet provider has to cut you off.?? SavetheInternet.com
